So, this morning I get woken up by my roommate at the CRACK and she was like, “Matt wake up. There was a manhole explosion.”
“Um. What?”
So I headed over to The Olde English where, like she said, there was a manhole explosion. I didn’t really know that that meant, or what caused it, but it was pretty serious.
There is a manhole on our patio, and the cover blew off and flew 20 feet into the air and smashed the brick on our old builidng :(
Hard hitting news here. We use emoticons.
At one point YNN was there and wanted to interview me. I haven’t seen the video yet, but it will probably go down as my worst interview to date. I was so hungover. I’m pretty sure it went something like this:
“Olde English Pub owner Matt Baumgartner was on site and he seemed verrrry out of it. He refused to take his sunglasses off, despite the cloudy weather. and he smelled like pickles.”
Also on the scene was The Mayor of Albany, and he was very concerned and helpful and assured us that the City of Albany (or National Grid) would be responsible for the damages, which I honestly didn’t expect to hear. So that’s good.
And National Grid was down there going nuts trying to get the power turned back on… as was the best electrician in the entire world, Joe Figliomeni.
Overall, there was some damage to our windows, the brick facade, and the electrical box in our basement was blown up.
We will be open later this afternoon.

- Our patio all messed up.
- National Grid trucks. NOT NIMO.
- Mayor Jennings on the scene.
- Our manhole.
- Busted bricks.

Yow, that sucks. Thanks god it wasn’t during a time when people would be outside enjoying the patio. And yes, I still call them NIMO.

Oh how terrible, but glad the Mayor stepped up to incur the costs! I also still call it NiMo…
