I’m gonna keep this story short because I’ve told it two zillion times already.
But basically my pup, Frankie, got hit by a car over the weekend.
Very scary stuff. Â At one point I thought he was going to die. Â Unknowingly, he was chasing after my truck on Burden Lake Rd. when I was heading to Kay’s Pizza.
I got back from Kay’s with 2 large pepperoni pizzas, a large cheese pizza, two orders of mozzarella sticks, 2 dozen medium wings, and a growling stomach. Â I pulled my pickup in front of my cabin, and a jeep pulled up behind my truck and said, “Matt? Â Hi. Â Do you have a black dog with a red collar?”
“Yes. Â Why? Â What’s wrong?”
“We just hit him with our car out on Burden Lake Rd.”
“Oh my god. Â Is he alright? Where is he?”
“We’re not sure. Â He went off the side of the road and scurried into the woods.”
“Oh my god.” Â I say. Â I go into the camp to double check that it was in fact my dog. Â “Steven,” Â I say to my brother. “Are my dogs here?”
“Yeah, they’re right here. Â why?”
“Oh my god. Â thank god.” Â So I go outside and say to the woman, “It wasn’t actually my dogs because mine are in my house. Â But I’ll help you look for the dog.”
So we drive back out to Burden Lake Rd. and I spend about 30 minutes trying to find the dog that was hit by the car.
It was pitch black, and we stopped looking and I went back to my cabin.
I walk in, grab a slice of pizza and talk about what just happened with my sister-in-law.
I look over to my pup, Frankie, and I notice that his nose is swollen, and it looks like there is blood on his nose. Â I walk over to him, and look at it, and I was like, “what happened to Frankie’s nose??” Â And he’s whimpering. Â I take a few steps back, and call Frankie’s name to see if he can walk towards me. Â He tries to sit up and walk, but can’t.
I realized Frank was the dog who got hit by the car. Â He must have made it back to the house after he got hit.
I start panicking and I scoop him up and put him in the backseat of my car.
I grabbed the keys to my brother’s Prius and drove 120 mph down Best Road, and then 130 mpg on I-787 towards the Latham 24-hour emergency vet.
I pull into the parking lot, run in to explain what happened, and 3 people follow me out with a gurney.
The rest of the next 24 hours was pretty emotional. Â They said he had internal bleeding, and a lung that might become an issue, and his nose was so swollen, he looked like Spudz McKenzie.
He stayed the night, and I picked him up the following afternoon. Â Since Saturday, he has been on some pain medicine, and some antibiotics, but he seems to be getting better each day.
I’d like to thank, Dr. Gavin, at the Latham Emergency Vet. Â She was basically dealing with a basket case, and she was so calm, and informative, and extremely sweet. Â I feel fortunate that she was on duty when I brought Frank in.
In fact, everyone at the hospital, including the nurse Kate, was amazing.

Latham Emergency Vet is awesome, they nursed my Yellow Lab back to health after it got mauled by a German Shepherd, then again when she decided to eat a pack of gum!!
They are very good at handling the emotions of their 2 legged “clients” as well!
great place, great team!!!!

Oh, Matt! Oh, Frank!! I’m so sad and glad at the same time. I hope you both get some well needed rest after this fiasco. And Frankie, when your Dad says stay here, I’ll go get the pizza, it means STAY HERE, you have no opposable thumbs to pay for the pizza!

Sorry about your Boy :( Scary stuff . I have to add my 2 cents about the latham vet. When we took our old girl in after she broke her back , they were absolutely wonderful. Even though she had to be put down (14 yr old weiner dog), they were supportive and allowed us all the time we needed to say good bye. They called us the next day to make sure we were ok. Can’t say enough nice things about them. Get better quick Frankie !!

OMG Matt I am crying just reading this. I am so happy to hear that Frank is home and being taken care of. Please keep us up to date. Give him a hug, a nice pat on the head and let him know how much he is loved and that we are all thinking of him. Hopefully he wags his tail so you know he is happy.

Oh no! Poor little buddy. I’m so glad he’s home and on the mend! We also spent the weekend dealing with emergency pet issues (cat ate a foot of yarn and it turns out, cats and yarn don’t mix – at all) so I can relate to your basket case-ness. I’m sure he’ll be back to learning how to pee on babies in no time!!

OMG Matt! I can only imagine how insane the whole experience was, as a fellow pet owner. That is my worst fear and I can’t grasp what you must have gone through. Poor Frankie. I hope he makes a fast recovery.

BTW, there is nothing more pathetic than seeing your baby’s arm all shaved for IV’s and blood draws and that sad, sad look on their muzzle. It only reinforces the fact that if you are a true dog owner, you will do just about anything you can to make them OK.

It is scary – a reminder of how life can change in an instant.
I also think a special thanks to the people driving the jeep that alerted you they may have hit your dog. Otherwise, you may not have acted as quickly as you did – a reminder there are honest good people in this world.
Glad to hear you dog is improving and will probably be up to his old tricks in no time.

I am so sorry about Frankie. I can relate to the panicked driving to the Latham vet, our previous dog had emergency surgery in Guilderland, we brought her home where she started bleeding profusely, and with the vet now closed, the only option was to drive like a maniac down Rt 146, and Rt 20 and up the Northway to Latham (literally hitting well over the 100mph mark and running red lights with the horn blaring…thank you Guilderland PD for giving me an escort instead of a ticket)…while my son was holding her, watching her bleed to death. Not a ride I ever want to go through again. She didn’t make it. They are wonderful there…especially when it came time to tell an 11 year old blood covered boy that his best buddy didn’t make it…. I am glad to hear that Frankie made it.

Congrats Matt, you are one of the many a-holes that must keep their dogs off leash and let them roam freely in an un-fenced area (near a road none the less). Unfortunately the only one that has suffered is your dog. An accident that could have been prevented with a small amount of common sense and hopefully you learn something from it.

Wow Jon- We don’t know the whole story (perhaps Frankie snuck out the door?) but even if Matt did allow Frankie off leash, you could have written your comment in a much more informative and compassionate fashion. People makes mistakes. It sounds like you’re one of the many “a-holes” than troll on comment boards.

Matt:
So sorry to hear of Frankies mishap. The last poster is an asshole! The picture of him laying on the couch with a pillow under his head obviously being well taken care of is a testament to the wonderful dog owner you are. We all know you care deeply about your dogs!

Re: Jon… Wow, you should be a grief counselor. You really know how to make someone feel better. Give me a break. Accidents happen. There’s no need to chastise Matt, especially when you don’t know the circumstances. I’m just glad Frankie is on the mend.

Hi Matt, I’m so sorry that this happened to Frankie. It sounds like you thought he was in the house the whole time (I point this out for Jon).
We’ll light a candle for a full recovery!

I am not trying to make anyone feel better, he should feel terrible, he let his dog get hit by a car. The dog is his responsibility, accidents happen, this is not one of them.
Do you regularly read this blog? Has he ever sugarcoated things to prevent hurting someones feelings? No, and neither will I. Lesson learned.

OMG!! I am so glad to hear Frankie is on the mend. God bless the vets out there that deal with basket case dog/cat parents like you and I. To the DB Jon – your comment assumes that Matt deliberately and always parades his dog(s) without a leash without thought of their safety. This is not the case. If you’ve ever read any of Matt’s posts, you’d know he is a dog lover through and through who always puts his pets needs/safety first. <>

This made me cry too. I’m sorry you’ve had to go through this. I’m glad to hear that Frankie is recovering. I hope he’s back to roaming freely soon, as dogs should whenever possible.
Having had to use the emergency vet more times than I care to remember (as far back as the old location across from Guptill’s), I have to say that it is the nicest place you never want to go back to.

My worst nightmare!! I don’t know if he could even eat it..being on all the antibiotics, but they do make doggie ice cream called ‘Frosty Paws’. Dogs are actually lactose intolerant so it’s specially formulated. This may be nothing new. But I thought maybe something soft & cold he could lick might feel good. They have it at Walmart. Anyway, I’m going to go hug my dogs & I hope he makes a full recovery soon! :)

Just wanted to wish Frankie a speedy recovery and I hope he is doing well now. And a speedy recovery to you too Matt because I’m sure you were having a heart attack on the way to the vets. Any pet owner would have been having major anxiety about their fur baby. Hope Niko is being good with the sick Frankie as well.

Wishing a speedy recovery for Frankie.
I have also made a few late night, frantic trips to the emergency vet with my cherished pets and understand how scary the experience can be.
I love the picture of Frankie recovering on the couch with his head on a pillow (and glad he doesn’t have to wear the “cone of shame”)!
Best wishes to you and Frankie…

Jon, you write: “I am not trying to make anyone feel better, he should feel terrible, he let his dog get hit by a car. The dog is his responsibility, accidents happen, this is not one of them.”
- First, I never said you were trying to make anyone feel better. However, if you were trying to impart wisdom and perhaps teach Matt a lesson there are better ways to go about it.
- Second, by definition this is was an accident. Nobody intentionally hurt Matt’s dog. If you want to argue it may have been a preventable accident, that’s a different story. However: None of us know the situation and whether or not Matt regularly allows Frankie off leash.
In any event, there is a time and place for snide, angry remarks- and this isn’t one of them.

The person in the jeep who stopped should be commended!! Many a person would have just kept driving. Even with Frankie making it back to the house you may not have reacted to his condition so swiftly had you not been told what happened. Kudos to the jeep lady!

Way to go Jon, Seen it a million times, people who think they have control of their dogs letting them wander off their leashes. Some kinda selfish or lazy way to handle your beloved pet.If you think about it the outcome can only be bad.I believe the percentage of dogs hit by cars while leashed is far less than those who are unleashed.

Poor Frankie! I hope he gets better soon. This was an unfortunate accident – who knows why or how Frankie was out of the house and on the road, but he was, and Matt probably feels awful for his poor doggie, so calling him names is not warrented. The people in the Jeep should be comended for being honest; many would have just driven off knowing that they may have killed a dog. Those types of people are a$$holes.
