I would love to blame this proposed amendment to North Carolina’s state constitution on a state full of ignorant rednecks with nothing better to do since the klan broke up. Unfortunately, I must blame this proposed amendment on a state LEGISLATURE full of ignorant rednecked ELECTED OFFICIALS with nothing better to do since the klan broke up. This isn’t a bunch of yahoos in a pick up truck, these are elected officials willing to sign legislation that proactively discriminates. Really, no really?

NC actually has Whole Foods. I’m proud that all of my friends in NC voted against the amendment. Unfortunately, it wasn’t enough.

I found it really disingenuous and misleading that they called it “Amendment 1.” It’s like they were counting on poor comprehension: “Of course I like the First Amendment. Freedom of Speech and stuff. Why would anyone vote against THAT?”

The last time North Carolina approved a marriage amendment was in 1875. It made interracial marriages illegal. This new amendment does the same thing, restricts loving couples from getting married in the State. I hope that North Carolinians are ashamed of having enacted the amendment they did back 1875. We can hope they will some day be equally ashamed of enacting the one they did yesterday.

What’s important to remember, is that this Amendment goes far and above exclduing same sex marriage. It also grossly inhibits the rights of single parents and those trapped in abusive relationships. As a gay man,of course, the marginalization and the discrimination are appalling to me, but as a citizen of this country, I am surprised that no one in any administration stood up to defend the right of all the citizens of that state, not just the gay ones. It is disheartening that both the Vice President, on Sunday;s episode of Meet The Press, and a member of President Obama’s cabinet both came out in favor or same sex marriage on a federal level, yet no one pointed the finger at a state that on tv, is begging for tourist dollars, but in practice is wholly mismanaging and abusing their own constituents. And they got away with it. It makes the promises and opinions of an election year, by both Democrats and Republicans totally disingenuous.

But then again, millions of people on tv, and hundreds of women in a studio, cheered on Chris Brown, a mediocre singer best know for beating the crap out of his girlfriend and getting away with it, so really, maybe the finger we point should be inward.

$20 says that there’s 5-6 people spearheading this who are ashamed, self-loathing,closeted gays. There’s no way that there won’t be just a bunch of ashamed, awkward apologies within about 15-20 years. Gay citizens are still citizens, and these people can’t comprehend what they’ve done until they see the polls affected. I think we’ll see this turn around in a relatively short timeframe as more states embrace marriage equality.

Here’s a situation where in about 15-20 years this nation is going to be all awkwardly apologetic to gay citizens. We can’t just say to these bible thumpers that Jesus still loves them because they won’t understand that this law is freaking insanely wrong. $20 says that there’s 5-6 people spearheading this who are ashamed, self-loathing,closeted gays. It’s something I guarantee that we will see backlash on relatively shortly.
