Little known fact. Â If you show up to JFK Airport, wearing a light blue suit, at 11:00pm, with only a wallet and a buzz, there is nowhere for you to fly.
I know this because last night, after a Christine Quinn fundraiser and 2 thirsty-two-ounce martinis at Quality Meats on 58th, Â Jeremy and I were like, “let’s go somewhere. Â right now.”
So we hopped a cab to JFK and tried to make it happen, only to be told there are no domestic flights that leave at this hour (we didn’t have passports, otherwise, I would have seriously considered the only international flight that was leaving, which was to China).
So, I guess it was meant to be. Â Being stuck in Puerto Rico without my fanny pack filled with xanax sounds like a personal nightmare. Â So it’s probably a good thing.
Although, I have always wanted to take a trip where I show up without luggage and then buy all my clothes for the trip while I’m there. Â I mean, you always end up leaving most of your clothes at some local’s apartment, anyway. Â Am I right or am I right.

Always wanted to do that! Good to know that I’ll have to get there earlier in order to make it happen.

You should have rented a limo AND a driver and headed West, there’s that whole time change thing and new people.

I always thought if you went w/o luggage, it sent up red flags for something illegal.

I remember the feeling of possibility I felt the first time I realized the freedom of a having a credit card and a passport in my pocket. Good stuff!

I’ve done both (went on a trip spur-of-the-moment without any luggage, and leaving all my clothes at some local’s apartment…although it was because I forgot them at my local friend’s house, not because I did the Run of Shame). I highly recommend both, so start carrying a secret Xanax stash and whip up some fashionable sock holder for your passport.

I have always kept my high limit credit card in my safe deposit box so that I would not do this very thing. It’s good to know there are other safety nets!

If you’d gone to Puerto Rico, I guarantee my grandmother would have shared her Xanax with you.

I know the feeling. About 20 years ago, one of my close friends and co-worker (I was his boss which makes this evenworse) went out after work for drinks after a very bad day and decided we wanted to go to San Diego for some sun, to visit his friend, and show the family owned company we worked for who was in charge. After consuming massive amounts of alcohol, I drive from Greenwich, CT to JFK. Ticket agents refused to sell us tickets due to intoxication. We went to every counter/airline begging for a ticket to San Diego or anywhere sunny and warm. We finally conceded defeat and left without somehow getting arressted.
I drove home and arriving to one of the tolls to the first bridge on our way home, we both realized we had no cash and there was no such thing as EZ-Pass. The toll booth operator was not sympathetic and demanded that I pass through and pull over to the shoulder and wait for further instruction. I waited for about 5 mintues and nobody showed up so I decided to make a go of it since the operator did not take my driver’s license.
We ended up lost in the South Bronx, my friend get out of the car in a nasty area, took a piss on a major road while screaming obscenities for no reason. We managed to find our way home alive without any physical damage to ourselves, the car, and more importantly to any innocent person on the road that night. I was expecting the police to be waiting at my apartment but that did not happen nor did any ticket ever come in the mail – nothing.
To this day I am horrified and have panic attacks when I relive this night in my head. I should have been thrown in jail for getting behind the wheel of a car – I had no business doing so. Secondly, if we did manage to execute our trip, we both would have been fired without question.
This is the dumbest thing I’ve ever done and can only say I learned my lesson. I am an older and wiser and would never do such a thing today.
I am a big believer in being spontaneous but life, work, responsibilty comes first.
