Bennett College

Millbrook, 2010 (Canon A-1 / Kodachrome 64)

I always have had a fascination with abandoned buildings.  This one, the Bennett College building, was a private women’s college in Millbrook, New York.  The building was built in 1893 and has been vacant since 1978, when the college closed.  The last I heard, the building was scheduled to be demolished by October 1, 2011.  I do not know if it actually came down, but if it did, I was not able to find anything on the Internet stating so.  Does anyone know if this place is still there?

It was still there around Thanksgiving, but it was dark both times that I drove by it and I’ve driven by it so many times I don’t really notice it any more. I’ll be driving by it again this weekend. I should probably stop and take some pictures of it before it is gone for good.

Yup, still there. It’s such a gorgeously spooky building–too bad that it’s fallen into such disrepair. Still, wonderful photo!

This reminds me of Kings College/Briarcliff Lodge in Briarcliff Manor. I lived in a Pace dorm during the first year of college and spent a ton of time exploring the grounds. I believe it was also demolished. Such a shame!

    Leigh,
My grandmother attended Edgewood Park School (before it was King’s College) from 1944 to 1946. She married my grandfather in 1945, but kept it a secret from the college and her classmates because married women were not allowed to study there. I have pictures that she took while a student at Briarcliff Manor.

    Nice photo Pete, very moody.

@Nancy: exploring this place is very hazardous, more so than other abandoned places I’ve explored. Here are some photos I took in March 2010, and the situation hasn’t gotten any better since then. This impressive building will collapse sooner than later. I like to document old buildings but local residents do not really see it that way about this location. We got spotted, busted and kicked out by the cops pretty quickly (my first “put your hands in the air” in this country). We were asked politely not to come back. I don’t really blame the police much on this one. The place is in much worse shape inside than what you can guess from the outside, we weren’t expecting that from doing our homework online beforehand. Even on the first floor I wasn’t quite sure about my footing and we didn’t get the time to go upstairs. Great building though.
