When I decide to refresh my closet, I gather a few investment pieces. They can go a long way, to mix, match and create! Sorry Lohan..it’s the return of ladylike. We were just momentarily distracted.
Take a look at the run ways, magazines and the streets. Combine classic ladylike cuts and styles with the trends of our season and bam. Get your jazz hands ready. Wintour would approve of jazz hands by the way.
So what is on for the season? Color blocking, British heritage fabrics and classic sophistication. Combine the plate of bright colors with classic fabrics; tweeds, herringbone and plaid. Take pencil skirts, bright blouses, blazers and classic heels and you win. Done! Throw these into an outfit with skinny jeans and Hunter rain boots – did you just leave Glastonbury with Kate Moss?
I think we have always been interested in that classic style. Think 1940’s. These looks are easy to do and work for a lot of body types. My friend has curves and a booty. I put her into a pencil skirt and joy rang out. Go embrace the smart laid back fabrics with the classic girl put together look.

Love! Ladylike is sexy! And really, who doesn’t love plaid?
Yours is my favorite blog by FAR Emily!
And your photos are amazing as well. I don’t want to
see pictures of what celebrities are wearing; I want to see
what real women are wearing and how they wear it.

Love this! Amazing photography…
What really enjoy is that this post embraces flattering feminine fashion without talking completely about yourself, what you like, what you are all about. Awesome advice, great writing.

Love the idea of three investment pieces that can be mixed and matched. A pencil skirt just made it to the top of my wish list! I love your blog and fashion sense.

This seems like a great opportunity to explore one’s creativity with the clothing they already have. I would like to give it a try :)

I like that you tell us where the goods are from, especially showing that you can have expensive items and something from Target and still look good. Classic is the way to go!

When I see a woman rocking this look I think sophisticated, articulate, and independent. Most importantly, this look reflects a level of genuineness that, unfortunately, is becoming a rarity in today’s culture: down to earth and comfortable with herself.

I agree, feminine is definitely back. I love the 70s inspired tie front blouses that are out now. More coverage but totally sexy and feminine.
Kudos for classics. Great investment pieces, easy to dress up or down.
I enjoyed reading this. Great pix, but a tip going forward, avoid the outlet plug…a tad distracting in a fashion snapshot.
Great post!

I have to say the bookends rocked the Friday Puppy fashion week. Bloggers 1 and 8 rocked the house! Nice job, and kudos to all eight for giving (cross out) a double ff, I mean a hoot for how you look when you walk out the door.

I agree with Claire, the First and last were the best. The 1st was very entertaining and the last (this one) the most helpful

Thanks for the comments everyone! I wanted to wait to see what everyone said before I jumped in here. So lovely to read them all! You guys are amaze balls!
@CAC Thanks for the advice about the outlet plug! I only add where things are from because I find it helpful when I look at other fashion blogs. A lot of times I enjoy a piece of clothing on someone and would love to know who it’s by or where to get it.
PS .. To someone who posted in Matt’s main post about “Fashion Week” regarding that I wasn’t snarky enough for Friday Puppy haha – oh you just don’t know me well enough yet ;)
